Happiness

Simple secrets to a happier you!

Ever wonder if you could buy happiness? Will we go out and buy happiness by bushels or pounds? What is it worth? Who will value or measure its cost? All these questions raise the same dilemma faced by all humans to define happiness. It is an abstract concept that cannot be seen or heard but can be felt, experienced, and enjoyed.

What is Happiness?

Is it what Dale Carnegie says, " Remember happiness doesn't depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely on what you think.

OR

Is it Marcus Aurelius Antoninus' belief, "Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking."

According to Aristotle, "Happiness depends upon ourselves." He was a great philosopher who was so right. We decide to be happy or not. It is a Choice we make. A conscious decision to be happy has to be made if you want happiness. It is not joy and peace put together as many believe.

Keep life simple: do good to others, be good to everyone, see good around you, speak good things, feel good about yourself, and expect good from people. It sounds and seems easy but it is not because we are fallible and human. We are creatures of desires and needs; and we make mistakes.

No time for regrets, move on and improve. We compare ourselves to others when we shouldn't. We are special, smart, and unique and believe in different paths to reach happiness. The word happy is relative; what may seem paradise to you may be torture to others. For example: You enjoy speaking in public, talking to people, and socializing. Yet these activities are fraught with fear for others. The proverb, One man's meat may be another's poison" is very true.

The concept of the glass being half empty or half full is important to being happy. Be positive and look at the bright side of life. If you want to, then you will see good people around you. However, if you are determined to find fault then you will find unsatisfactory people. Remind yourself that the glass is half full; never half empty.

Life has its ups and downs, twists and turns, side turns, and bad left turns. This is life, as we have to live it. Embrace everything, good and bad times; they are part and parcel of life. It's beautiful and ugly, we cannot understand one without experiencing the other. Theory of contradictions according to Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher.

Karma or dharma, or duty as the Hindus believe is important to our next life, if there is one. Do your duty, job, work, or your karma so that you can fulfill your karma, do not worry about others. Do not get angry, annoyed, or anxious with anyone because you have to do what you have to do, whether they like it or not.

So, let's summarize what we ought to do in order to be happy:

  • Choose to be happy
  • Goodness around you
  • Be optimistic and make a conscious effort to look at things positively
  • Flow with life don't fight it!
  • Do your duty, job, or karma (the Hindu belief of one's duty in life)

This is a beautiful piece of writing - so much so that it has inspired me to follow a course 'the course of miracles' which I am looking forward to. Thank you, Nita. I can't tell you how much benefit your energy inspires in others and your philosophy of life.
